Careers Advice

At Harborne Academy, we want to give our young people every opportunity to think about their career options and make the right decision for them beyond the Academy. To help with these difficult decisions, we have created an online Careers section on our new VLE, Firefly, explaining about the UCAS system, Apprenticeships and Careers in general and signposting you to the best sites and resources on the web today for guiding school leavers. There are even simple online questionnaires for those who are not sure yet what to do and video case studies to give an idea of today's career options. At Harborne Academy, we also support students to think about their career as they progress through their studies.

In Year 10, students will be encouraged to take part in a two-day “taster” placement giving them an introduction to the world of work and a taste of the sector that they are looking to work in.

The taster day experience is not just about a two day placement with an employer it is about the wider experience of completing an application form, attending an interview and being successfully chosen for a  placement. Students are supported to create and develop their own CV and given constructive feedback on their interview.

In sixth form, students will be given the opportunity to participate in a longer work experience placement.

Following the support given to students in Year 10 with completing application forms for taster day placements; in Year 11 they receive guidance and encouragement when completing application forms for college, sixth form or apprenticeships.

Through our links with Birmingham Metropolitan College students are given the opportunity to participate in careers events and a further mock interview. This provides them with information about a variety of career pathways open to them. They are encouraged to make enquiries about their chosen career to assist with making decisions about further education, employment or training.
