English Plus

English Plus is a unique and truly innovative beginning to your child’s secondary school experience. At the heart of English Plus is the expectation that each child will make aspirational progress no matter what their starting point. This includes gifited and talented children who come to the Academy with level 6 and above.

The focus of English Plus is to make the foundations for learning through an emphasis on the development of basic and soft skills. The soft skills, those of developing resilience, creativity and resourcefulness are seen as being as critical to our students’ future success as other skills.

Our aim is to grow confidence, independence, to develop their character and skills, while instilling courtesy and graciousness, to help them make a telling contribution in later life. English Plus schemes of work also reflect the changes in English GCSE from first teaching September 2015.

Mathematics, Science, French, PE, Arts, Technology are taught separately but linked into the themes delivered by English Plus. SMSC, PSHE and British Values are integrated into our schemes and taught cross-curricularly; alongside literacy and numeracy, time is also found to deliver these aspects of our curriculum during form periods, assemblies and challenge days.

“English Plus, centred around project based learning has won plaudits from Ofsted and other schools alike. Project based learning is proven to embed the key strands Literacy and Numeracy and develop them to a standard of excellence. Our project based themes include LIVE events (Learning Impact Visits and Experiences), of which there at least three a year. These experiences are taken back into the classroom to embellish learning as well as developing independent, creative, self –managing, personal thinking and learning skills which are essential to developing the child as a whole.” Matthew Fortune, Director of Year 7, Humanities, Arts and English Plus.
